How we work
Our editorial standards.
Useful household guidance should show its sources, respect uncertainty, and make safety limits easy to find.
Research and sourcing
We prioritise primary sources and practical technical references where available, including public agencies, university extension resources, peer-reviewed research, local water-quality reports and manufacturer manuals. Important claims should be supported by sources that actually address the claim, not by a generic link list.
Measurement and units
When discussing water hardness, we distinguish mg/L or ppm as calcium carbonate from grains per US gallon (gpg), explain approximate conversions, and note when classifications vary. A regional map is not treated as a result for an individual household. Cost figures must name their source, geography, date and limitations.
Product recommendations
We explain what a product is designed to do and what it may not do. An advertised grain rating, filter stage count, testimonial or affiliate commission is not proof of performance. Readers should compare specifications, certifications, maintenance, installation and total ownership cost.
First-hand testing and photographs
We do not claim to have personally tested water, cleaned a surface, installed equipment or measured a saving unless the article documents a real test. Original photos, measurements and test results should include enough context for readers to understand the method and its limitations. Where first-hand evidence is not available, the article should say so rather than imply a test occurred.
AI and editing
Software may help organise research or prepare drafts, but the publisher remains responsible for checking calculations, citations, product instructions, links, safety details and claims. Generated content is not a substitute for original research, real product tests or qualified professional review. We will not imply an expert reviewed a page unless that happened.
Safety and professional advice
Cleaning guidance must respect both the cleaner label and the material or appliance instructions. Never mix bleach with vinegar, acids, ammonia or other cleaners. Water-softener calculators are planning aids, not engineering specifications. We direct readers to utilities, laboratories, qualified plumbers or water-treatment professionals when a problem falls outside routine maintenance.
Corrections and updates
When a material error is confirmed, we correct the content and update the date when appropriate. Changes to estimates, product guidance or source data should be reflected in the article. Readers can share the article URL, exact claim and supporting evidence via the route described on the contact page.
Commercial independence
Any affiliate links, paid placements, gifted products or sponsorships must be identified clearly. Commercial relationships should not buy favourable conclusions. See our affiliate disclosure.
